Taking your children on holiday can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it’s not without its problems, as delays, long flights and sun stroke can turn even the most considerate of children into little monsters. But help is at hand, and if you’re looking for some advice on how to travel with young children, then here are a few tips to help you get started.
Expect the Unexpected
Travelling at any time, regardless of whether you have young children or not, can be very stressful. After all, you’re being taken out of your comfort zone, and travelling hundreds, perhaps thousands of miles in the name of relaxation. While this isn’t the most blissful start to any holiday, remember that it won’t be very exciting for the children, and so it’s best to pack lots of extra treats and toys to keep the kids occupied, such as sweets, books, activities and even rewards for behaving well.
Be Patient
We all know that airports, bus stations and train stations aren’t place that you want to spend hours and hours in while you wait for your connection, so bear in mind that this will apply to children too, and if they see grownups getting stressed and wound up while they wait, then they are more likely feel that way too. So try to keep calm in stressful situations, make sure that the kids know that travelling will also involve a lot of waiting around, and try to keep them and yourself entertained with the toys and various other distractions that you will have packed.
Parent on the Plane
Some holidays, such as
Cyprus holidayswill involve a relatively short flight, compared to other flight times, but for a child this time will seem at least ten times longer. Your role as a parent doesn’t stop once you’re on the plane, so remind your child that bad behaviour will not be tolerated during the flight, and keep an eye on them. Buy headphones so they can listen to the radio or watch the in-flight film, which will keep them occupied for a time. And as previously mentioned, reward them for good behaviour with a new toy that they can play with on the plane.
